เรื่องของเรื่องมันก็มีอยู่ว่าที่ฟิลิปปินส์มีสถิติการเกิดไฟไหม้มากกว่า 8,000 ครั้งต่อปี ซึ่งพื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่ก็มันจะเกิดในย่านสลัม เพราะตัวบ้านมักจะสร้างจากวัสดุที่ติดไฟได้ง่าย บ้านที่เคยอยู่กันมาหลายปีก็มลายหายไปต่อหน้าต่อตา

มาถึงตรงนี้อาจจะสงสัยกันว่าในเมื่อมันเกิดไฟไหม้บ่อย ทำไมซื้อถังดับเพลิงติดบ้านไว้ละ? ซึ่งคำตอบก็คาดเดาได้ไม่ยากครับ “มันแพง!” ถังดับเพลิงถังหนึ่งมันราคาประมาณ 1,350 บาท (45$) ซึ่งแน่นอนว่าสำหรับผู้คนที่อาศัยอยู่ในย่านนี้ เขาคงไม่มีกำลังพอที่จะซื้อถังดับเพลิงแบบปกติได้

Forests of the World: The Mourning Trees

Background: On Oct 28 2013 Denmark was ravaged by the worst storm in history. The tiny welfare nation was in shock. Wreckages of buildings, train lines and cars were everywhere. Everybody was mourning their material losses. But no one thought of all the trees.. Creative solution: Forests of the World and their German sister organisation Oro Verde had previous given voice to the trees with the campaign ‘The Donation Army’. Now it was time to engage the trees once again. So on the very day after the storm, trees all over Copenhagen could be seen with signs asking people for a minute of silence. Results: People picked up the messages and shared it through social media. Traffic to the organisation’s website doubled and engagement on their facebook site increased with 416%. But most importantly: The trees spread consolation all over Denmark and raised awareness for the Forests of the World.

Reaction, Inc: Exo housing system to relief disasters

Texas-based designer, strategist and inventor Michael McDaniel was having a morning coffee as usual, when he suddenly came across a brilliant solution to disaster relief housing.

His idea was the Exo Housing System, a smart and portable shelter that has two parts. It resembles how an inverted coffee cup would look. The base of the housing unit is flat like a coffee lid, and the overturned cup acts as the shelter.

Together with great designers, technologists, and business minds, he set up Reaction, a company that aims to ‘revolutionize disaster response’. To date, they have been deeply invested in the Exo Housing Unit.

Exo units are light enough to be moved by hand, but tough enough to withstand bullets.

Manu Prakash: A 50-cent microscope that folds like origami

The Foldscope, an origami-like microscope, is the size of a bookmark, virtually indestructible and costs only $0.50 to produce.

Its creator, Manu Prakash, assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford University, hopes such a microscope will allow for easier and more wider detection of blood-borne diseases like malaria, African sleeping sickness, schistosomiasis and Chagas. Each kind of Foldscope is for a specific disease, with 12 in total.

“I wanted to make the best possible disease-detection instrument that we could almost distribute for free,” said Prakash to Scope, a medical blog run by the Stanford University School of Medicine. “What came out of this project is what we call use-and-throw microscopy.”

A Foldscope can be put together in a matter of minutes to create either a bright-field, multi-fluorescence or projection microscope. The device uses a spherical lens, rather than a curved glass lens, which is what makes this so unique. The new lens can magnify samples up to 2,000 times.

Assembling the microscope is easy, as the parts are color-coded and folded according to the color. No writing instructions are needed, eliminating the usual language barrier to such a project.

A user can put a sample on a slide and insert it between the paper layers of the microscope. The Foldscope can also be fitted with LED lights, powered by a watch battery, or used to project images on a wall. That lets researchers or doctors look at the information together to make the correct diagnosis, or allows the Foldscope to be used as a learning tool for students.

สิ่งที่ผู้จัดแคมเปญต้องการคือ จะต้องทำให้คนเม็กซิโกในเมืองอื่นๆตระหนักว่ายังมีคนอีกนับล้านที่ยังต้องการความช่วยเหลือ จึงเป็นที่มาของไอเดียที่แสนจะเรียบง่ายแต่กระแทกใจเหลือเกิน โดยการทำโมเดลบ้านไปวางในบ่อน้ำตามที่สาธารณะในเมือง Polcano หนึ่งในเมืองที่มีเศรษฐกิจมั่งคั่งที่สุดในเม็กซิโก เพื่อเตือนสติว่ายังมีผู้คนที่ยังต้องการความช่วยเหลืออีกมาก พร้อบกับแจกใบปลิวที่เสนอทางเลือกเพื่อให้ความช่วยเหลือ

ผลจากการทำแคมเปญนี้ ผู้คนเริ่มบอกต่อใน Social Network บางคนถึงกับซื้อของใช้ที่จำเป็นเพื่อไปบริจาคที่หน่วยกาชาด
